点评:I only had an hour to visit the Strawbery Banke Museum last week, so I stuck to the houses with roleplayers and was Delighted to meet both Mrs. Martha Stavers (sister-in-law of the tavern owner) from 1777 at the Pitt Tavern and Mr. Avrum Shapiro (Ukranian Jewish immigrant) from 1919 in his home.
The Pitt Tavern was built in 1766 and was visited by George Washington, John Hancock, and the Marquis de Lafayette. It was interesting to be able to walk around the building and Mrs. Stavers was full of light-hearted information pertinent to the running of a tavern at the beginning of constitutional times.
I Loved every second of meeting charming, warm, knowledgeable Mr. Shapiro who immigrated on a freight ship from what is now Ukraine to Boston before making his way to Puddle Dock in the early 1900s (around the same time my family was making their way on freight ships from the same area to Baltimore). It was fascinating to learn about his journey from the old country to his life in the new one along with a relatively sizeable Jewish community that settled in the area. Sadly, Mrs. Sheva Shapiro was not at home when I called, but she had set the table beautifully before Shabbat that evening.
The Strawbery Banke Museum is a collection of historic homes on one street that have been preserved to display crafts and exhibitions representing the history of Portsmouth and is a must-see when in the area! I Loved every minute of the too brief time that I had to explore - I only had an hour and wished that I had at least two more to get to see it all.
