点评：When President Barack Obama designated the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument on March 25, 2013, it officially became the 401st unit of the U.S. National Park System. We visited in April, free of charge, to learn about Colonel Charles Young's life, his family, and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. Colonel Young was an accomplished man, especially considering the immense adversity he faced. In 1917, he was promoted to colonel, making him the first African American to reach that rank in the United States Army. He died of a kidney infection in January of 1922. A century later, in 2022, he was posthumously promoted to the honorary rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army.
Visiting hours are Friday through Sunday only, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the historically preserved home that Colonel Young called "Youngsholm." Free parking is available onsite. No other visitors were present during our visit. On the second floor, we watched the 10-minute film "A Triumph from Tragedy: The Life of Charles Young." Because there is no elevator, visitors must use the stairs to reach the screening room. Overall, expect to spend about 30 minutes touring this site.
