I attended two concerts this month. Australian Pink Floyd and yesterday’s Herbie Hancock group. Whoever is running the sound system should be sent to an audiologist. Some reviews blame the hall, but that’s ridiculous. The hall is fine. It’s the amplification that destroys the music (and probably people’s hearing). Perhaps the sound guy is in fact hearing impaired (This IS a known occupational hazard). Which would explain why he’s unable to hear the mess that the over-amplification and EXTREME base amplification is causing. Good sound work would allow listeners to hear the music at under 100 decibels, and even locate the source the player and his or her performance on the stage!
The base players get the worst treatment as the subwoofer amplification turns their musical notes into blasts of incoherent percussion that stomps on the playing of everyone else in the band. Save your money and your hearing, and avoid the Boch/Wang Center until they figure it out. And performers… please play somewhere else where your music can be fully appreciated.
