Early 19th-century Roman Catholic church in New Town
St Mary's RC Cathedral的点评
点评：St Mary's is located at York Place in New Town. It is free to visit and open from 8.30am to 6.30pm (weekdays) with extended hours on weekends. This is the seat of the Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh and the first new Roman Catholic chapel built in the city after the Reformation.
The cathedral was built in 1813-14 by James Gillespie Graham and is Neo-Perpendicular Gothic in architectural design. Later works by Augustus Pugin saw the cathedral's traceried windows and elaborate chancel added. The facade is very nice while there are also interesting things to see within. These include the National Shrine of Saint Andrews including holy relics. The high altar and baldacchino are nice, as is the lovely fresco above the chancel and facing the nave.
We really enjoyed visiting St. Mary's Cathedral while sightseeing around New Town in Edinburgh. It is definitely worth a few minutes to look around if sightseeing in this area of the city.
