点评:This place turned out to be an unexpected short stop during our travels as we passed through town.
Upon arrival we were not interested nor had time to go on a train ride, therefore we did not enter the train station, and instead proceeded over to the General Store, made a purchase, and then proceeded out, where we then noticed the grounds.
There were no staff or employees to guide visitors anywhere, and it appeared to be set up as a self-guided tour so we began exploring.
We entered a few of the buildings; the old hardware store, the tractor garage, the salt & pepper house, and the fire station. As we approached the car museum at the top of the hill we had an interaction with one of the staff who was eating his lunch.
As we greeted him, he was clearly annoyed by our presence and gruffly asked if we had our stickers?
We didn't know what he meant and assumed he was referring to auto museum stickers, and asked if we could purchase them with him. He unprofessionally and kind of rudely informed us that we needed to go back down to the train station to purchase them. Again, we're thinking it's specifically for the auto museum entry only.
We apologized for our error, informed him that we would sort it out, and proceeded back to the train station.
While in-route to the train station we stopped into another out building on our way, (there are several) and as we were exiting it, this same auto museum staffer basically accosted and began berating us, sternly telling us we weren't allowed there (in the exhibit) had been told where to go and that we needed to leave. We again explained to him that we were on our way to the station and would be leaving the premise.
For someone who is there to guide and be helpful, he was the exact opposite: rude, unclear, non personable, unhelpful, and not an ideal candidate to be working with the public.
Once we got to the train station we explained to the gentleman behind the train ticket counter what had happened, our interaction with the auto museum 'gentleman', took accountability for our mistake, and offered to correct the matter.
As we'd only seen about 4 of the exhibit buildings we made a donation and left.
It's too bad, as the place is very interesting, but one bad apple, can sour the experience, as it unfortunately did for us.
I'd like to suggest adding clearer signage or a main check-point where guests have to show their admission stickers or tickets to gain entry. Perhaps even adding "Have you paid your admission fee?" signs on the exhibits themselves. Visual reminders if you will, to keep everyone honest.
If you've never been here there are several access ways onto this property where you can walk right onto it with zero interaction with staff...well, until you get to the auto museum of course, or obviously if you're planning to go on a train ride.
I'd like to add that part of why we entered the general store first was to see if there was an entrance fee, which there of course isn't, but perhaps having admission tickets available for purchase there as well would help streamline guests correctly.
Either way, your admission fee system needs improvement, as it was never our intention to not pay on purpose.
