点评:When you travel, sometimes you have to be open to the unexpected and you get great experiences. Researching for this trip I was looking for an afternoon activity after hiking the morning in Olympic and before returning to Seattle for a stop at a winery stumble across the Dungeness Spit. I had heard of Dungeness Crab, but I thought they came from Alaska. Turns out the spit and the headlands above it reminded those first Europeans that saw it of Dungeness, England hence the name. The bay created by the Dungeness Spit was crawling with crabs hence the name of the crab.
I knew in our limited time that we really did not have time to hike the sandy spit and the incoming tide was likely to put much of it under water. However, I saw that there was about a one-mile loop trail on the headlands that would provide good views of the spit. Unfortunately, the day we went the strait was covered in fog that rolled over the headlands but was being burned off by the sun. We would not get great views of the straits, the spit or the mountains. However, we were treated to one of the most amazing and surreal hikes in the fog. The pictures capture some of the sights but it was simply more amazing in person. In addition to the fog show, we were also treated with a great forest hike and close up experience with deer. This is a great place to experience the sea and the land in NW Washington and who knows you might get to see something unique and magical.
