点评:On our way home after several days in Mississippi, this was our last planned stop. The main visitor's center is excellent. An introductory film about the Battle of Vicksburg (more like an extended siege) and artifacts, displays from that era were extremely interesting. Since we had only a limited amount of time, we left from there to the incredible Caro exhibit and museum. Seeing an ironclad warship up close was amazing. I was amazed that someone could think that covering a warship with iron and be confident in its ability to stay afloat - of course they did, but this one's was the first victim of a "torpedo" attack. The story was quite interesting, but just seeing the massive structure and reading about the crew and amount of coal needed to fuel it were the real highlights for me. The hull shows the effect the torpedoes (mines actually) had on it - amazingly no crew members were injured. A fascinating museum and exhibit.
The whole park and the impact the outcome of the Battle of Vicksburg had on the War Between the States are extremely impactful. The memorials and monuments throughout deserved more time to explore that we allotted. A return to Mississippi is unlikely, but this site just outside a charming old river town would be a full day's stop if we did.would be
