点评:I tried my hand at diamond mining at Crater of Diamonds State Park in mid-April. I arrived early on a Monday morning (they open at 8:00 pm) and had no problem parking near the entrance. I rented equipment from the park, but I stopped at Home Depot and picked up a few 5-gallon buckets and some thick rubber gloves. The 5-gallon buckets cost $4, and it is $5 to rent a 3-gallon bucket. I gave them away at the end of my day.
Stuff you rent is old, but serviceable. The wagon is only slightly better than dragging stuff around. Many people just walk around a look for diamonds on the surface. I decided to dig buckets of dirt/gravel and wash it in the public wash tanks. The technique was easy to learn on You Tube and they also give onsite demonstrations. You will meet some interesting people because as it turns out…washing rocks is a social activity.
Reality – the place is very big, so crowds are not a big problem. The terrain is very hard to walk on, especially if muddy. There is no shade. Digging, carrying buckets, and washing the rocks is tiring and very hard on the back. You will get wet and you will be muddy. You will have to take your centers (heavy material from the saruca) home and sort through them to find the small diamonds. I flew home with 19 lbs. of heavies.
That all said, I had fun giving it a go. I chatted with my washing neighbors, and I probably washed 12 to 15 5-gallon buckets of dirt/gravel. The rental equipment must be back by 4:00 pm, but I was beat and left about 3:00. I did not find a big diamond, but I still have my big bag of heavies to sort through.
Side note: I stayed in town but there looks like there is plenty of camping onsite. There are a few trails onsite. I walked a couple the day before and never saw anyone else. They were in good condition. The water park was not open while I was there…and did not look like it would be opening anytime soon.
