点评：This mansion is one of the main things to do in Newport, along with the other cliffside mansions. You can buy tickets online in various combinations of the properties, although The Breakers has timed entry. If you book through the cruise line, you have a limited time at the mansion, so we decided to book independently. Since we were arriving by cruise ship, it meant that we had to tender in, and we weren’t sure how long that would take. So the other option is to pay a little bit more for a membership, and then there is no timed entry, which is what we did. They have different levels of memberships, but since we were a group of 6, we chose 2 memberships that each allowed 3 people (the two named individuals and one guest). We Ubered here from the Tender Pier near Perrotti park. Other options included the free Route 67 bus/trolley from the Newport transportation center, or a Turo/rental car. The Ubers were easy to get from Perrotti park, but less frequent over by the mansions. The Breakers had a parking lot, so I think next time I would get a Turo to drive myself and be on my own time table instead of waiting for the free bus (the route/mapping/timing was confusing). As you enter the mansion through the gates there is someone there making sure you have your timed ticket, are with a tour group, or have a membership. Then you enter the grand grounds. Upon entering the mansion, they scan your tickets, then you are off on your own! Download the app ahead of time for the audio tour, this was awesome! Remember to bring your earbuds to connect to your phone for the audio tour. Otherwise you can just hold up your phone to your ear like normal, or there was also a transcript that you could read. The tour was very descriptive, informative, and gave great directions. This is really where you would learn a lot. It described the rooms, the people, the artwork and details, the stories, and the history. It was very interesting. You start on the first floor and loop around. Here you will see the main ballroom, the dining room, the library, and the music room areas. Then you move to the second floor via staircase. Here you see lots of the bedroom areas and where the servants would move about the mansion, as well as the terrace room. There is a small elevator that the staff calls for you and directs for you if needed, just talk to the staff that are positioned for that specific purpose (the audio tour gives directions to the elevator). After looping the second floor, you go down into the basement via staircase. There is another small elevator here if needed. In the basement is the kitchen and the pantry and more servant areas. After checking out the basement, it leads to the gift shop, which is quite expansive. Members get 10% off merchandise at the shop. After exiting the gift shop, you are back on the grounds to wander and see the gardens and the large yard with view of the ocean. There are some great photo opportunities here. Right now, the backyard is under renovation so we could only go as far as the gardens, but I would like to come back to see it fully in its glory. Overall we did just the main part of the tour and it took about 1 hour going at a standard pace. There were side stories in the audio tour that we skipped, but I bet if you listened to those it would take 90 minutes total to walk the house. There are very minimal places to sit (a few benches here and there), but not many overall so be comfortable standing for a while, or bring your mobility needs. Overall the detail and architecture and art and furniture and history of The Breakers was fascinating. We would love to come back and do more of the mansions that we passed on the way over. And now we can since we have the membership! If you are interested in the gilded age, or a history buff, then this will be very interesting to you. Glad we got to do one of the main things to do in Newport!
