点评:Colonial cemetery is probably the second-most famous cemetery in Savannah, the first being the much larger and more impressive Bonaventure Cemetery about 3 miles outside of town. That should not deter you from visiting, however, and this one is pretty much in the center of town.
This cemetery’s history parallels that of the city, with fortunes that rise and fall and events such as plagues or even fashion trends. They believe that something like 10,000 people are buried here, but there are only 600 or so gravestones – many of the original grave sites have been lost. Many are in vaults, not entirely unlike the ones in New Orleans (although there is no water table here). Many bodies were moved to other cemeteries when this one was not being maintained.
Perhaps the most famous occupant of this cemetery is Button Gwinnett, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was famous for a time in the Guiness Book of World records for having the most expensive signature sold at auction. He, or a robot named for him, also appears in the videogame Fallout 3 in the Smithsonian Institution of the year 2277. He stupidly died in a duel less than a year after signing the declaration, and the guy who shot him is also buried here. However, they are not sure quite where in the cemetery he is buried, so they have just a plaque.
Some of the gravestones have been altered, some say by union soldiers, to make it look like the individuals lived for hundreds of years.
Note the mistletoe growing in some of the trees.
This is a convenient place for a stroll and, perhaps, to get some of the history from 250 years ago. Admission is free.
