点评:Thread the Needle on the Scenic Drive! After exploring Wind Caves National Park, we drove to Custer State Park for a scenic drive and surprisingly spectacular views of Mount Rushmore. Our first stop in Custer State Park was a 90-minute walk around Sylvan Lake in the late afternoon (see photos). Then we hopped into the car and took ourselves on the scenic drive through the park on Road 87 (the Needles Highway) to Road 16A (Iron Mountain Road) back to Keystone. The map listed several tunnels and their widths. Interesting. I did a little research on the iPhone to see how wide our rental car was. We cleared the narrowest tunnel with about eight inches on either side of the car. This was quite an adventure. We pushed the side mirrors closed and threaded the needle. The other three tunnels in the sequence were each wider than the previous one. A wonderful surprise awaited us as we emerged out of the Doane Robinson Tunnel: the tunnel was like a picture frame, and Mount Rushmore was the subject (see photo). I am very glad we went to Custer State Park on our road trip.
