点评:Via di Gracciano is one part of ‘il Corso’, a long, winding street that runs between Piazza Grande and the ancient city gate, Porta al Prato.
You can easily walk it. Strolling the ancient streets of the Corso is magical. It’s the best way to get a sense of the town's colour and history. Along the way, you pass tiny piazzas, grand Renaissance palazzos, shops and restaurants and cafes before reaching Piazza Grande and the Cathedral.
If you are trying to follow a map, it can be a bit confusing at first. Although it is commonly referred to as ‘il Corso’, it is not normally labelled on a map in this way. Even more confusingly, it changes names along the way.
Starting at Porta al Prato, the street stretches for just over a kilometre and starts off as Via di Gracciano, but then becomes Via di Voltaia, then Via dell'Opio and finally, Via Poliziano.
It is a slow but steady uphill climb from Porta al Prato. The slope is gradual and gentle, rather than being incredibly steep, so it is easily manageable for most people.
There’s next to no traffic. It is not strictly a pedestrian zone but there are very few vehicles so you can walk freely along without dodging cars.
Overall, it’s a wonderful mix of colour and atmosphere alongside history.
There are lots of opportunities to linger over shops selling artisanal pieces, leather goods, painted tiles and ceramics. You can pick up a gelato, stop for a coffee or browse in the wine shops, many of which offer tastings.
For those interested in historical sights, the main stops along the way are:
i) Piazza Savonarola- look out for the Colonna del Marzocca and the grand 16th century Palazzo Avignonesi at #91, decorated with lion heads. Next door at #73, is Palazzo Bucelli, with its unusual display of ancient Etruscan reliefs and inscriptions built into the facade.
ii) About halfway, you will see Michelozzo’s St Augustine’s Church and the fun Pulcinella’s Tower
iii) Piazza delle Erbe has the Logge del Grano, a medieval market centre and Palazzo Cervini.
Pulcinella's Tower
