点评：Lewes is known as the first town in the first state, and this stop really brings that history to life. The Dutch influence is visible everywhere—from the architecture to the museum’s design—and it makes the visit feel unique compared to other small coastal towns.
We arrived around noon on our way to Ocean City. Parking on Kings Highway was a bit confusing (30‑minute limit but meters accepting hourly payments), so we chose a lot on Franklin Avenue near the Presbyterian church. No signs restricted parking, and it was an easy walk to the museum.
Behind the Zwaanendael Museum is a lovely park with benches where we had a quick picnic. There’s also a small outbuilding with clean men’s and women’s restrooms—useful since the museum itself doesn’t have public facilities.
The museum building is striking on its own, modeled after the Dutch architecture of the 1600s, and inside we found a compact but fascinating set of exhibits. The highlight is the collection from a late‑1700s Dutch shipwreck, which helped me appreciate how many vessels were lost along this coastline. There are also displays from Delaware’s once‑major canning industry and even a quirky “Merman” exhibit that adds a bit of fun.
We also visited the Fisher‑Martin House that is also on the grounds, now the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. It’s an early‑ to mid‑1700s home with its own story—including how it was moved to its current location. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and it’s a great place to pick up brochures or ask about things to do in town.
Lewes has a charming, historic feel, and if we’d had more time, we would have explored the streets and architecture more. Overall, this is a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in early American history, Dutch colonial influence, or simply looking for a peaceful and educational break.
