点评:Our trek with the Amigos de Huayhuash was one of the best travel experiences of my life.
It started with a warm welcome from Anamin, who coordinated our trek, lodging, and transportation. Her kindness and professionalism were clear from the moment we arrived and only became more apparent with each day. She treated us like members of her own family. Clear expectations were set and met at every turn.
After a few days acclimating in Huaraz we met our guide, Rafael, our chef, Crispin, and our arriero, Abner. These men demonstrated professionalism, knowledge, and mastery of their work. At our morning and evening meals together (we were often on the trail for lunch) we would practice Spanish, share stories, and laugh so much. We learned from all three about life in Peru and the Huayhuash, particularly from Rafael, who has guided in the area for many years. We never had to worry about our bags or where the next camp would be. Abner made sure everything arrived safely and was ready for us as soon as we got to camp.
All of the gear was high quality and in good shape. The food was delicious and there was a lot of it. We were hardly ever hungry, because we ate so often, but we were always looking forward to Crispin's next creation. The terrain and surroundings were some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. The only surprises we encountered were pleasant ones: a trailside picnic halfway through our hike, a hidden treat after dinner, a sunset walk to a good viewpoint.
This was an expensive tour compared to some of the other options. I think in this case you get what you pay for. Of course we didn't experience exactly what the other groups did. I suspect that the gear might not be top-notch like Amigos' is. The pack animals might be overloaded and tired (the Amigos rotate their animals so that this doesn't happen). The guides might move you along too quickly without knowledge of the area, or worse, might not be certified guides at all. The food might be more utilitarian, and you might not eat with the staff or get an opportunity to know them. Everything that Amigos de Huayhuash did so well elevated this already spectacular trek to a rich cultural experience that I will remember forever. I cannot recommend them highly enough!
