点评:There isn't much in the way of tourist attractions in Portpatrick apart from the ruins of of Old Portpatrick Church of St Andrew.
These are tucked away off St Patrick Street and reached down a grassy track next to a house called Loudon. This leads through an iron gate into the churchyard. The remains of the church with its round tower are fenced off.
The church dates from the early C17th and was built to serve the newly formed parish of Portpartrick and may have been on the site of an earlier chapel.
It became a famous destination for runaway marriage couples from Ireland who were looking to exploit Scotland’s more permissive marriage laws. There was a daily passenger ferry between Donaghadee and Portpatrick. The Church of Scotland minister was willing to turn a blind eye to rules about publication of banns or rsesidency requirements. This meant the 'happy couple' could disembark, complete the ceremony, and be back on board within an hour. (The lucrative trade declined from 1826 after church courts interfered and was halted by Lord Broughams Act of 1856 which implemented a strict 21 day residency requirement.)
By the mid C18th the church was in a poor state of repair and a new parish church was built on the edge of the village. The graveyard continued in use until a new cemetery was opened.
There isn't a lot to see and a visit may only take a few minutes (hence the 3* rating). Don't be put off by this as it is a delightful site and definitely worth the short walk to find.
