Pleasant garden but could be tidier
Priorwood Garden的点评
点评：Priorwood is frustrating, if you’re a keen gardener. It truly has all the elements of a lovely garden - ambiance, charm, seasonal colour and scent, a wonderful apple and pear orchard, and plentiful places to sit. It’s right in the middle of Melrose and is surrounded by sheltering honey-stoned walls. And for many, all of that will be fine.
But it lacks that final 10% that, frankly, all public gardens should have, particularly one owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Now, the garden is free, as is that of nearby property Harmony House, but that shouldn’t be an excuse. So what’s missing? Essentially a critical eye. The stack yard and compost area is visible from the main garden; that’s fine, but it needs to be tidy and organised. We could just about overlook all the random white dumpy bags piled up, presumably awaiting removal to the tip, but not the large bed mattress slung on top of them; the area just looked a mess. In the garden itself, we noted a few plants in containers that had clearly expired a while ago and should really have been either removed or replanted. Summer editing in the borders is fine but in a public garden, leaving a large patch of bare earth in the display beds during the growing season is a bit of a no-no, particularly when, down the road at Harmony Garden, a number of flowering herbaceous plants in large pots were sitting outside the greenhouse there and could have been moved to fill the space? Being a traditional gardener, I’m not a fan of ‘wild’ areas in formal gardens. It has to be done skilfully. I anticipate that Priorwood probably has Spring bulb displays in its orchard; time needs to be given to allow bulb foliage to die away naturally but such areas should really all be cleared by the end of July. Now, some gardens are playing the ‘wilding card’ and leaving this until the end of the season, which you can get away with, just, in large orchards remote from the formal areas. At Priorwood, some strimming around the fruit trees in the orchard would have dramatically enhanced the abundant, and vibrantly colourful, apple and pear displays. And we found a random apple tree branch lying beside the grass path which one assumes had broken off one of the trees in the past couple of days. All of this could be remedied very easily, although one accepts some tasks require more resource than others.
Frustrating, indeed, as there is much of beauty here, and good evidence of horticultural skill in this lovely, relaxing space.
