点评:I rarely leave reviews, but after spending nearly $1,500 for just a two night stay, I feel obligated to warn other families before they spend their money here.
To be fair, I’ll start with the positive. The two bedroom cottage was excellent. It was clean, spacious, comfortable, and exactly what we expected. If I had rented the cottage by itself and nothing else, I would have been completely satisfied.
Unfortunately, everything else about our stay was one disappointment after another.
Months before our trip, I booked a cottage package because it advertised a complimentary four seat golf cart. That promotion was the deciding factor in choosing Callaway Gardens over other resorts. An almost $800 deposit was immediately charged to my account, but I never received a confirmation email. After several days, I called the resort because I wanted to make sure my reservation actually existed. I was assured everything was fine and that I would receive a confirmation email.
When the email finally arrived, it was incredibly vague. It simply listed a two-bedroom cottage. It did not mention the complimentary golf cart, the five Explorer Passes I had already purchased, or provide any itemized breakdown of what was included with my reservation.
During the online checkout process, I was prompted to purchase Explorer Passes. The booking process explained that guests staying at the resort who purchased the passes during checkout would receive unlimited access to the included activities for the duration of their stay, unlike visitors who purchased Explorer Passes separately after arrival, which were presented as single day passes. That additional value was exactly what made the passes appealing to us. We were traveling with several children, and knowing we’d have unlimited access throughout our stay made the purchase an easy decision. Based on that information, I purchased five Explorer Passes as part of my reservation.
Our problems started the moment we arrived.
We checked in around 8:30 pm after regular business hours. The main entrance was closed with absolutely no signs directing guests where to go for after hours check in. We drove around the property trying multiple addresses from our emails before finally finding a beach entrance where a very kind employee pointed us toward the Lodge.
The front desk employee affirmed that maps were misleading, yet no signage was posted despite them being aware of the confusing layout. He was friendly and drew us a map to our cottage. However, no information was provided about the golf cart or the Explorer Passes. When I specifically asked about the golf cart, I was told I could pick it up outside from the bell staff. I then asked how to obtain the Explorer Passes and whether I could purchase one additional pass because my father had decided to join us. I was told they couldn’t help with the Explorer Passes at the front desk but that I could drive the golf cart to the information center the next morning. I was even told taking the golf cart would be the better option because we’d get to see more of the resort along the way.
When I went outside to pick up the golf cart, I was told I didn’t have one.
The employee went back inside to verify, and both staff members informed me that a golf cart wasn’t included with my reservation. I explained that I specifically booked the advertised package because it included a complimentary four-seat golf cart. They asked to see my email or show proof. Since my confirmation email contained almost no details, I had nothing showing everything that was included. Instead of honoring the advertised package, I was offered a rental for $175 per day. Since our family needed transportation around the property, I reluctantly upgraded to a six-seat cart for $200 so everyone could ride together. I shouldn’t have had to spend another $200 for something that was one of the primary reasons I booked this resort. Rather than continue arguing and ruin the first night of our family vacation, I paid for it.
The next morning we had a slow start. We enjoyed breakfast in the cottage, took the kids to the pool, and really enjoyed the accommodations. Again, the cottage itself was wonderful and we had absolutely no complaints about it.
Around 10:30 that morning we picked up the golf cart. The employee helping us was wonderful, but the cart itself was another disappointment. It had less than half a tank of gas which kept flashing at us, the rear brake lights stayed illuminated even after it was turned off and the key was removed, and the turn signal/horn assembly was broken and became extremely hot while driving.
Following the directions we had been given, we drove toward the information center to pick up our Explorer Passes, only to discover that golf carts weren’t allowed anywhere near the building. We had to park alongside the road and walk the rest of the way in the July Georgia heat despite specifically being told we could drive directly there. Had we known we would have to park and walk, we simply would have driven our vehicle. Misinformation is the commonplace here.
At the information center, I was asked for a QR code that was supposed to have been emailed to me before arrival. I did have a email stating I would receive a QR code. Just like my reservation confirmation, I never received it. Thankfully, the employee was able to locate my purchase using my name and print my five Explorer Passes. Since my father had decided to join us after I made the reservation, I purchased one additional adult Explorer Pass, bringing our total to six.
After my passes were printed, I asked if there was a brochure listing everything included so we could plan our day. That’s when I was told the Explorer Passes did not provide unlimited access and that each activity could only be done once. This was especially frustrating because the unlimited access during our stay was the primary reason I purchased them during online checkout instead of waiting until we arrived. The booking process specifically presented that as the advantage of buying them with our reservation, yet once we got there, we were told something completely different.
We tried to stay positive because the kids were incredibly excited about the inflatable water obstacle course. They have done these many times in the past and would spend hours doing them if allowed. We were informed they could only do this for ONE HOUR.
After spending some time at the butterfly center, we headed back toward the cottage. On the small hill leading into the cottage area, the golf cart didn’t have enough power to make it uphill. Three of the six people riding had to get out and physically push it up the hill in the middle of a Georgia summer.
Later that afternoon we changed into swimsuits and headed to the beach. My son immediately asked a lifeguard if there was a swim test required before using the obstacle course as this has always been standard to him. Instead, we were told the obstacle course was closed until 1:00 pm the following day for cleaning. We have to check out at 11am.
This was devastating for the kids because it was the activity they had been looking forward to most. Had we known it wouldn’t even be open during our stay and also limited to one hour, we never would have purchased the Explorer Passes. Even when I purchased an additional Explorer Pass for my father just hours earlier, no one mentioned that one of the resort’s main attractions would be unavailable during our stay.
Even more frustrating, we never saw anyone cleaning the obstacle course. The lifeguards were sitting on it, talking, and diving off of it while guests were told it was closed.
We ended up not using a single one of our six Explorer Passes. The obstacle course was the entire reason we purchased them. The kids had no interest in kayaking or paddleboarding separately. We came for a family vacation where everyone could enjoy activities together.
For dinner, we decided to eat at the Piedmont Dining Room after reading multiple reviews about their prime rib (one of our favorites) and seeing it listed on the resort’s website. When we arrived, prime rib wasn’t even on the menu. We resorted to ordering ribeye instead, which was excellent, but yet another disappointment. We would not have spent an additional $250 and gone to this restaurant if they did not have prime rib as we can get a great steak anywhere.
Our waitress, however, deserves recognition because she was phenomenal. She remembered all six of our orders without writing anything down, kept drinks filled before they were empty, was incredibly attentive, and even surprised the kids with gelato at the end of dinner. She was genuinely one of the highlights of our stay.
After dinner, my husband asked if we could exchange the golf cart because of the mechanical issues. At first, it seemed like the employee didn’t want to swap it because we were checking out the next day. After some discussion, she agreed. While looking up our cart number, she immediately said, “Oh…you have #35. That’s the broken one.”
That statement perfectly summarized our experience.
The issues with the cart were already known, yet it was still assigned to us with faulty lights, a broken turn signal, poor performance, and less than half a tank of gas.
Callaway Gardens is undeniably beautiful. The grounds are gorgeous. The cottages are wonderful. But beautiful scenery doesn’t justify spending nearly $1,500 for two nights when nearly every amenity we planned our vacation around either failed to meet expectations or wasn’t available.
Between the confusion surrounding our reservation, paying an additional $200 for a golf cart that was advertised with our package, confirmation emails that omitted major parts of our reservation, never receiving required QR codes, inaccurate directions, a defective golf cart, Explorer Passes that did not match how they were presented during booking, the resort’s signature attraction being closed during our stay without disclosure, and restaurant menus that didn’t match the website, this vacation became a series of frustrations instead of the relaxing family getaway we had planned.
The most disappointing part is that this resort has so much potential. The property itself is stunning. The cottages are fantastic. But guests don’t spend nearly $1,500 to simply admire the scenery. They pay for the complete experience that is advertised. Unfortunately, that was not the experience we received.
I cannot recommend Callaway Gardens based on our experience. If you’re looking for a beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting, you’ll likely enjoy your stay. But if you’re choosing this resort because of the amenities, activities, and packages promoted during booking, I would strongly encourage you to think twice. We left feeling like we paid premium prices for an experience that consistently fell far short of expectations.
