Atmospheric Visit, but limited beyond the Prison

点评：Alcatraz is certainly impressive from the outside, and I was a little taken aback by just how large the island looks as you approach it. However, once on the island, I felt somewhat limited in what there was to actually do beyond the main prison.
After getting off the boat, there’s a walk up to the main cellhouse where you’re provided with headphones and a device for a self-guided audio tour. The tour itself is confined to the prison interior only. While the narration is excellent and very well produced, I felt there was a missed opportunity to include more of the island’s external history and features, which is a real shame given how much there is to see outside the cellhouse and the cost of tickets to travel and enter the facility.
Personally, I would have liked the audio experience to start from the moment you step onto the boat heading over to the island and continue until your return, as this would have added much more depth to the overall experience. The self-guided tour itself took about an hour to complete.
On the day we visited, the weather was cold and gloomy, so be prepared for the elements. That said, it certainly adds to the atmosphere and gives a stronger sense of what life may have been like for the inmates.
