点评:What can I say about this man, Ismael, what a guy and what a superb week I had in November with him!
He hosted me for most of the week in his log cabin that he built from scratch with his dog Lecce, I noticed on arrival that here there is no such thing as plaster and insulation. They use the old fashion plaster - mud! Amazingly, it was a very warm house.
I enjoyed our adventures, we explored the wine valleys of Chile and tasted some of the expensive wines of the region, surfed every day as he taught me the fundamentals of ocean surfing and educated me on the Chilean way of life.
Pichilemu and the people Ismael introduced me to have a different way of life than the ones I have met on my trip in Santiago. They are all about living their lives the best way possible. Currency is in favours in this part of the world and not nessessary money. In between surf trips Ismael would say 'before we go I have to drop off x', it may be compost, a drill bit, surfboard etc. Helping out your fellow neighbour in the town and somewhere down the line they will help you. He paid his mechanic a bottle of wine instead of currency to sort out an issue on his car. He spent most of the week apologising to everyone we met for not getting an invite to his wedding, a popular figure in the town.
As a surf teacher, you will learn the fundamentals of ocean surfing, he is very patient and helps you develop your skills whether you are a natural or a beginner. Ismael also has plenty of surfboards and wetsuits (which is needed in the Pacific Ocean) so all equipment is taken care of.
Evening time and going to a local bar where the price is much the same as the UK and this is a rural part of Chile, but the local was full until 3/4am with everyone enjoying themselves despite the price of the drink, the venue and the entertainment made the night.
I was amazed to hear though that no-one wants to leave the area, it is beautiful and the positive atmosphere of the region I could understand why. I felt as I left on the bus that I escaped a Lotus Garden of the world as I could have stayed for much longer. Pichilemu is very much like the Hotel California - 'you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.' And I am sure you will feel the same too.
Thank you Ismael and I hope we can meet again soon
Highly recommend, Ismael will not disappoint!
