Like a medieval cathedral in timber – an extraordinary survivor

点评：The Great Barn at Harmondsworth is an extraordinary building. Its scale is difficult to appreciate from a written description: it has the proportions of a cathedral nave, but constructed almost entirely in timber. The informative displays help you understand how such an enormous medieval building was actually put together and how it has managed to survive to the 21st C.
The barn is normally open twice a month, as well as for special events. Heritage Open Days in September are an especially good time to visit, when there are additional displays and activities. The roof was completely re-tiled in 2012, a huge undertaking using handmade tiles, which will hopefully help secure the building for many years to come. There is a small film showing this at one end.
One of the most interesting things is its setting. Despite being very close to Heathrow and major roads, Harmondsworth still has a surprisingly strong village feel, with its church, pub and cottages clustered nearby. The scale of the barn also tells you something about the landscape that once surrounded it: the exceptionally rich agricultural land here supported farming on a scale that required a barn of these proportions.
There are some excellent recorded oral histories, including memories of the area when it was still actively farmed. The barn is now owned by English Heritage but is opened by volunteers, several of whom have direct connections with farming in the area during the 20th century. That local knowledge adds considerably to a visit.
There are no toilets or other visitor facilities at the barn itself, although there are two pubs in the village. Parking is available at the barn when it is open, but the car park is locked when the barn closes. If you want to explore Harmondsworth afterwards, make sure you move your car first.
A remarkable survivor, and well worth seeking out; for the sheer experience of standing beneath its vast timber roof.
