点评：St. Johanns Tor is one of the old gates to the Basel City Walls. While every gate had a tower for protection of the entrance, today this is simply one of the remaining historic city gates with Saint Alban and Spalen. This tower marks the northern entrance to the city where the wall met the Rhine River. While you could both pass through the gate and climb up on the wall, you could not enter the tower. We visited this gate before getting on our river cruise that was docking at the St. Johannes Park.
I love the old walled city, and it is great they kept this tower so you can still see it. However, while interesting, if you can only see one of the tower gates, I would see the Spalen next to the University of Basel on the west end of the old city. It is more traditional in both appearance and function. Still, this is a great part of the city's history to see if you have the time.
