点评:Saturday 7th February we were exploring the sights and points of interest along the streets of Fort-de-France, the capital city of Martinique.
Our quest took us along Rue Victor Sévère where this impressive building is located.
Originally built as The Hôtel de Ville, the Town Hall, it opened in 1901. It was built in the neoclassical style, a revival of ancient Greek and Roman art, architecture, and design principles, prioritising symmetry, simplicity, and grandeur.
As well as it's ornate architecture there are a number of notable features including the ornate metal balconies, gates and wooden shutters
Above the three arched windows, with a balcony, are the words "Hotel de Ville " with the crest of Fort-de-France above that.
On the roof, in the centre of the building, stands the ornate clock tower, the clock was not working, this was topped by a belfry.
In the grounds of the building were a number of decorative street as well as the two fountains in front of the building, neither were working at the time of our visit.
The build was designated as a historic monument in 1979.
It now a cultural centre and houses a theatre and museum dedicated to Aimé Césaire.
Césaire was born on the 26th June 1913 in Basse-Pointe and died the 17th April 2008 in Fort-de-France aged 94.
He was a renowned poet, playwright and politician. He served as mayor of Fort-de-France for 56 years from 1945 to 2001and was also a member of parliament for Martinique.
At the time of our visit it was not clear if this beautiful building was open. The large gates, the entrance to the grounds, were locked. The clock and the fountains were not working. In addition the banners outside the building, advertising events and performances, dated back to June 2021.
