Odd culture is a new space in Newtown. It is a restaurant experiencing with fermentation, and evident through both the food and drink menu.
What a great spot, for you can eat in the restaurant upstairs or in the bar area, or even out the front like we did. This suited us, since we didn’t have a booking and we also had a little baby who was kept entertained by the passers by.
To start, we enjoyed their beer bread, or their house-baked sourdough with odd cultured butter. Even our little guy loved this one!
There’s a bunch of little bites, small and large plates. We shared two of the large plates and sides. The WA octopus was unreal. Perfectly cooked octopus, soft and tender and seasoned with red pepper brown butter, capers and some crispy potato segments.
The snapper was aesthetically beautiful, and tasted amazing. It was soft and flakey, sitting in a seaweed butter and “scaled” with slivers of radish.
The potato loretta sides were a highlight - soft balls of potato, with a light crisp exterior and served with an incredibly tasty garlic butter. We paired this with a refreshing salad; leaves with regianno cheese and vinaigrette.
They’ve got a great range of beers on taps, wines and cocktails. I tried the strawberry Collins, a fermented strawberry soda with gin, aperol and lemon. Next time I’m definitely keen for their brown butter espresso martini.
The venue also does some fancy brekkie dishes too, think buttermilk pancakes with miso caramel.
