点评:I'm fond of Desi Dera, over along the south west end of Bristol's slightly seedy Stapleton Road, with its busy clientele of locals, taxi drivers and delivery riders. Hearing that the prop at Shah's used to cook there and has opened his own place on Roman Road in Easton, I stopped by the new venture to have lunch. The shop fit at Shah's wasn't quite done when I went but it's open for business, bijoux and compact as Stephen used to say, having just a handful of shiny metal tables. Rather like desi dera, there's a menu both online & on the wall but it's easier to peer into the display cabinet to see what you fancy. Mr Shah and his cooks will have prepared it all so it's just a matter of asking about each dish to find out about the ingredients/flavours etc. Then order as many naans as your appetite demands, a can of your favourite pop and grab a seat. This is about as straightforward as eating out can get!
On my first visit, I had murgh cholay, served with a simple salad and a yoghurt dressing. A meal of hot chicken stew, salad, a naan & a soft drink is a great lunch. At £6 it's great value, too. The chicken was moist and tender, the gravy pungent and tasty, the salad fresh and the naan delightful - straight out the oven, topped with ghee and with just the right amount of char. Nice.
re the description of their flatbread as a naan, I'm used to an Indian naan being slightly fluffy, partially risen due to the use of yeast/yoghurt in the dough. Shah's are flatter than a typical British Indian restaurant naan and I'm thinking that they're more like a simple tandoor bread, however they're tasty, freshly cooked and filling, so the exact name is academic.
If I hadn't fancied the chicken & chickpeas, I could have chosen from rice-based dishes like biryanis, veggie-friendly saag aloo, a pyramid of sikh kebabs, or platefuls of samosas and so on. All these are familiar home-cooked fare, exactly the sort of homely everyday dishes you expect at a local café, serving neighbourhood residents. Shah's is cheap and cheerful, serves inexpensive home-made food and will always be busy, with happy customers popping in & out all the time. I wish him every success.
