点评:First break in two months, and I am hanging out to go out, get some good food and relax! Even with metronet playing havoc with getting public transport, it still felt like a (kind of) holiday. Looking out the window from a view of rolling green to a sea of urban roofs to the city with it's panorama of concrete gave me the chance to sit and just take it in. I don't get out to the city as often as I would like, so this time I decided to pay 3 visits to Hylin, twice to the Cafe and once to the Back Bar. Both of which are in the samebuilding, - obviously the bar is to the rear. My first two visits were to brunch, due to the menu I had viewed on their website. (hylincafe.com)
As usual, closer to late morning than breakfast (I am an early bird otherwise)
the cafe wasn't so busy as I thought it would be but it customers ranged from nearby workers having morning tea to young parents with their offspring and of course, the friendly dogs with their owners. Seating is both inside and out and on a day that was bright and sunny, was just the ticket. So I was inside, sa others had grabbed the outside tables. I was just by the open window so had a good view of the street and the two labradors with their owner busy on his laptop outside.
Upon discussing with my server Courtney (upbeat, chatty and full of good cheer), my mind was made up. First, my drink (Refresher - orange and apple juice, raspberries and mint) and then StreetX Chicken Croissant. My drink arrived promptly, very pink to put a rose to shame. Very pretty in it's tall glass, very cold (has ice) and not as sweet as it looked but berry, (pun intended) nice and a thirst quencher. It had looked like a sugar overkill but it was really refreshing and set me up for the food to come.
The plate looked huge with the toasted croissant cut in half and the chicken and bacon covered in smoked mozzarella and with a poached egg on the side laying on a generous layer of basil chilli flaked aioli. And it didn't stop there. As a counterpoint, the maple syrup was perfect, lifting the sweetness out of the dish so you could enjoy the crispness of the chicken and bacon. While the texture of the cheese gave it depth, the smokiness was enough to give a rich mouth feel, so I was glad I had also ordered a coke to drink. The spot on poached egg I had mixed in with the croissant; separate to the filling, so by the time I had finished the meal, I was happy on a bit of a carb high. I honestly don't think I needed to eat anything else that day.
The next day, I came in around 30 mins earlier to try the other menu item I had been tempted by - Smoked Chicken Quesadillas. After getting there in my car I had found it only beat the travelling time by train by only 20 mins (#CityLife) but didn't account for trying to find a park or trying to get a ticket.
The atmosphere was more business like with customers on phones, laptops and WFH which probably reflected the time of day I had entered.
Courtney remembered me from yesterday and pretty soon I had my plate in front of me. Even though the menu description sounded full on compared to yesterday's dish, to me, it didn't look as large in volume. Quesadilla's can be like that, they are sneaky. They seem to sway you into believing they are a light meal but can pack quite a punch to keep you sated aaaallll day!
The quesos were cooked well, neither burnt nor raw, and the amount of chicken within was balanced with the amount of the other ingredients.
The spicy kick of the jalapenos was just ahead of the flavour and texture of the red capsicums and the red onions added a fresh sweetness, rounding out the dish. The salsa and coriander combined with the garlic sour cream to give it a tasty but silky and full mouth feel.
Note: There is only one toilet in the cafe and parking can be found on the street but it is limited. It is also a very busy area both vehicle and pedestrian wise, with a short walk to the train station.
