点评:Quite hard to find the entrance - poorly signed and looks like you’re driving into a factory car park. The rather quotidian surroundings and the contrast with the gardens only serves to make the gardens seem even better!
The garden is very reasonably priced - only £5.50 for seniors and free for RHS members on a Thursday. Some RHS partner gardens tend to be rather a disappointment (like Sherborne Castle, made worse by £14 entrance!). This garden is an absolute gem with a lot of naturalistic planting, rock features and a lot of water (keep young children on reins). As well as a huge mill-pond, there is a wonderful natural-looking stream with a very generous flow of water which is circulating thanks to an ancient (Victorian?) pump. The grass is looking very dead with the current drought.
A huge disused railway viaduct spans one part of the garden, which adds more interest and is rather photogenic. There is a good cafe attached and a small plant sales area where we found some of the best plants we’ve ever seen in such a context. If you were to bring your sandwiches and flask there are chairs and tables scattered around the garden which would make for a lovely picnic spot. Also there are many benches scattered around where you can sit and soak up the beauty. For those who are a bit unstable on their pins, there are some awkward spots, or more widely when the stone pavings are wet - take care.
We are keen garden visitors around the country and this must be one of the best.
