点评：In theory, The Australia (or ‘The Oz’, as it’s known locally) should be the best pub in Porthmadog.
It enjoys a prominent position on the High Street, is quite an imposing building, and is backed by the Mŵs Piws/Purple Moose independent brewery, also based in the town. Sadly, it doesn’t really utilise any of those assets to make it a decent pub.
Beer-wise, whilst the Mŵs Piws beers can be varied and interesting, I always find it lacking a number of beer types. That or the version they have isn’t particularly nice. I’ve spent many an hour consecutively drinking different beers at The Oz, in a quest to find one I actually like, and never landing on one. A very frustrating experience.
In terms of vibe/ambience, it’s also pretty ‘dead’, no matter how many people are in there. The staff are polite but seem to be lacking personality and the overall experience is rarely better than ‘meh’.
BTW - just to clarify, this review is based on me occasionally drinking there since Purple Moose took the pub over, which is the best part of 10 years ago. It’s therefore very much a ‘considered opinion’ rather than a knee-jerk one.
Tafarn Pencei, The Ship/Y Llong and The Red Lion are all far better pubs with much friendlier staff and a happier vibe. Personally I’d choose one or all of those over The Australia any day of the week. Purple Moose Brewery, take note…
