At the “Ride a Wave Surf School,” I felt treated with condescension. While their English was poor (with the exception of one individual), communication was challenging on both ends, and it was clear that they were not making much of an effort to ensure I understood or felt comfortable. The young staff member, probably around 15-17 years old, made it obvious that he didn’t take me seriously. He seemed to think of me as an inexperienced surfer who wasn’t worth his attention. His lack of motivation was evident, and he made jokes about me to his colleagues in his language. And yes, I could understand enough to get the gist of it.
The reason I didn’t seek out another provider was simply because we were looking for a shaded spot, which is available there for a fee, and we didn’t feel like searching further.
Let me remind you—you're here to earn money from us. Our payments are what sustain your business, your livelihood. That’s no way to treat customers or the people who are helping keep your business running. The young man still has a lot to learn about respect and professionalism. I’m giving an additional star because the older gentleman at the counter was polite, despite the language barrier, and the one instructor I saw appeared to have potential.
My advice: If that young man behaves this way with other customers, it would be best to call him out on it. He needs to understand the impact of his actions, and you can then move on to find a better experience elsewhere.
