点评:Even in an ancient US city like Boston, very few restaurants and bars fall under the category of "historic." Many try to re-create a Colonial-era experience (check out the Boston Tea Party shipboard dinners!), or hang sepia-toned photos of someone's long-forgotten Irish ancestors to give a pub a more authentic feel. Ultimately, though, a bar/restaurant earns its patina and wear through time, and time alone.
Grendel's Den is one of these places. At half a century in business, it's outlived the majority of taverns nationwide, and is in its second generation of ownership.
On a recent visit, a small group of us went for lunch. Eschewing sunlight and pleasant temperatures outside, we opted for seats in the dimly-lit dining room. THIS is why cellphones have flashlights.
The menu defies categorization, and features appetizers and entrees from a variety of cultures and cuisines. Everyone at the table found something to their taste, and all were satisfied. I especially enjoyed my Salvadoran Vegetable & Tofu dish with the addition of salmon! The beer and wine list is well-selected, and it was nice to see an emphasis on locally brewed beers. Prices are reasonable, especially for this real estate, and our server was pleasant and professional.
