Zen is a small undecorated place in Rancho Penasquitos, in Northern inland San Diego county. They do have a few tables but it looked like most of their business comes from takeout. No ambiance aside, the food was great, a combination of Cantonese and Taiwanese. They call it "Asia Bistro" because they serve some Thai dishes and some sushi, bulk of the menu was Chinese. The hot and sour soup was thick with lots of vegetables and great taste. The lo mein with barbecued pork was flavorful although the pork had been reheated and some of the pieces were tough to chew. We also had a good Mongolian beef.
The menu has proteins listed separately (shrimp, beef, chicken, pork) from sauces (kung po, General Tso, lobster) so you mix and match. Portions are big and mildly spiced, although you may order it spicier if you like.
Zen would do better to focus on only Chinese - "Asian Bistro" is misleading. And though the food is tasty and the prices reasonable, there is really no ambiance. If they want to make it as a restaurant, they need to upgrade the furnishings (tables, chairs) and the decorations and lighting. Also, they should serve the soup before the main dishes rather than everything together.更多
