点评:It’s not a proper trip to Hawai’i without having local Hawaiian food. And that was the craving that led me to Kehau’s Kitchen. Unfortunately there weren’t any good authentic local owned spots around Honolulu, so I had to head out to Aiea for this craving fix.
The family owned restaurant, located in a unassuming strip of businesses, had plenty of parking. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming from the moment you enter the doors. There’s a nice selection of local specialties to make anyone happy (unless you’re vegetarian or vegan).
I got the Local Boy Combo, which consisted of a Lau Lau, Kalua Pork, Grilled Pulehu (short ribs) - all piled over a huge bowl of rice and with a side of Lomi Salmon. The portion is big and was perfect for sharing with my partner. I had also wanted to try the Tripe Stew, however it was not ready yet. The Lau Lau was really good, moist and filled with a nice amount of meat. The Kalua Pork was equally good, very well flavored and not dry at all. The star of this dish was definitely their Grilled Pulehu. Something about their secret marinade elevated the standard grilled short ribs up a level. There was a nice sweetness that brought balance to the savory. I couldn’t stop eating it from the first bite on!
Service was above and beyond the usual in Oahu. My friends and I chatted with the chef-owner and enjoyed hearing of his thoughts and creative processes in his culinary pursuits. We were thrilled to try their new salsa recipes in the making and shared our honest feedback. His mother was also working there and was our lovely server. She was equally warm and friendly and by the time we finished our meal, it felt like we were friends. That’s how amazing the service and connection with them was.
That Grilled Pulehu though…might be worth a trip back to Oahu.
