点评:My son was visiting from out of state where he does not get fish frys. We had a large group of family members joining to celebrate his birthday.
It was a Friday night and we got there early knowing we were a large party and they don’t accept reservations (very few places do). We walked in and the restaurant smelled a little off putting. I couldn’t determine the smell but it wasn’t beer or greasy smell, just not a fresh/clean smell.
We were promptly greeted and brought pitchers of water for the table which was nice. The waitstaff was friendly.
We ordered some beverages from the bar as well as 2 appetizers to start and a person in our group ordered a separate appetizer for her meal along with a salad. We also ordered clam chowder and the famous gumbo. I will admit, it has been a while since I’ve been to the Village Green and always enjoyed the gumbo in the past.
The server returned to say there was no clam chowder (on a Friday nite) so everyone went with gumbo. It came out very very brown and very stew-like thick and didn’t have all the yummy seafood bites that it used to have. It was not enjoyed by anyone that had it. Also, the salad that was ordered for dinner, was brought with the soups and there were no apps in site.
Our food was brought out and the server apologized but the apps were still coming. At this point, she should have asked if we still wanted them! All were underwhelming and it should be noted that the Mac n cheese bites are SPICY.
The server said the baby reds with parsley butter were a top 3 in her book. Unfortunately, three of us got them and soon regretted it. They were diced potatoes with dried parsley and oily not buttery.
All in all, the staff was delightful. Smiling faces, saying hi when you walked by and made you feel welcomed. Sadly, the food just didn’t do it for my family.
*Note the fish is in a cornmeal batter. It was crispy and not greasy, but it seemed some got more than others and several in the group prefer a beer battered fish which was not an option. They ONLY serve cod vs other restaurants that offer Lake Perch or Haddock. Just some Friday Fish Fry thoughts.
**Bring Cash, they do an up charge (like many restaurants) for using a credit card.
