Great Skiing Close To Home
Alpine Valley Resort的点评
点评：I grew up in nearby Antioch, IL and skied a lot when I was growing up - I actually worked in the equipment rental department at Wilmot Mountain - about a half-hour away. Beside Wilmot and Alpine, one other nearby ski hill is at Grand Geneva (called the Mountaintop). Out of the three - my opinion is that Alpine is the best - by quite a bit. Steeper, longer terrain but plenty of beginner options as well. Keep in mind - this is the Midwest - not Colorado.
I started skiing again three years ago after taking a 30 year hiatus. Not sure why but time flies when you're living life. This year I bought a season pass as I live ten minutes away in nearby Elkhorn. It was around $500 for the senior pass and at close to $60 a day for a lift ticket - I'm certain I'll get my money's worth.
A lot of folks complain about crowds but I don't go on weekends so I can't comment. They do have great high-speed lifts and quite a few of them so if there's a long wait you can be certain it's really crowded!
I've not been in the hotel but the outside won't be mistaken for anything built - or remodeled - recently. Old chalet style brown and white exterior has seen much better days. But, walking out your door to the mountain would be worth a lesser star property to me.
The eating options at the resort include cafeteria style and a few sit down options. My favorite is the upstairs bar-restaurant. Decent food if a hair or two overpriced. Ditto the drinks and their prices. If you're staying there, definitely BYOB.
If you have the option, try to take advantage of the small crowds during the week. The bonus is lower prices as well. All in all - I love Alpine Valley.
