点评:On the way back to Buckley is a turn-off that leads to the ghost town of Thurmond. Strange, here in the midst of coal country, here’s a railroad town (much like the ones that dotted the West). The town supported the trains that supported the coal industry. The town had a large train maintenance facility, a large coal tipple to feed the coal engines and all sorts of support facilities – banks, hotels, stores and the like. Many of the larger buildings have been preserved (at least the outsides have been preserved). It’s a strip town down along the tracks. Leading into town is a modified train bridge. It still has tracks. But where there was an additional set of tracks, there is now a narrow one lane road crossing the river. The bridge (and subsequently the one lane road) is long. A bit worrisome should you encounter another car. But when we were there we saw only two other cars.
We walked about ‘town’ and peered in the windows of the remaining buildings. Surprising at how much survives. They’ve even restored the original train station and made it into an information center (not open now since it’s off-season). It was a most interesting and enjoyable drive to town and a walk through it.
