点评：While the ice cream itself was very good, we had a very awkward and uncomfortable experience. My 10-year-old ordered sprinkles on his ice cream, and was told that the sprinkles were at the end of the counter. I didn’t think much of it honestly- I figured they added them for you later at the register. I was ordering my cone and paying when a different employee who was not helping us shouted at my 10-year-old “NO! DON’T PUT THE SPOON BACK!” Startled, I looked up to see my kiddo with his waffle cone in one hand, using a self-serve sprinkles station they had set up at the end of the counter. It was a tray filled with cups of sprinkles and candy, and he was trying to very carefully add sprinkles to his ice cream. He was just as surprised as I was to hear her shouting. She ran over and snatched the spoon away. Confused, I asked what the problem was and she said in a very exasperated tone that the spoon had touched his ice cream- which she claimed he had already licked- and now she was going to have to throw away all of the sprinkles and wash the spoon. I apologized and fumbled with my cone and credit card trying to pay and help at the same time. She said he could choose any of the other candy available on the tray. Still a bit confused as to what was happening, my son then tried to add gummy bears with the long wooden tongs they had provided for the task which was nearly impossible to do without touching the ice cream. As I was trying ting to assist, she said it would be easier if we just dumped the candy on the metal tray in front of the candy station and used our fingers to add it to his cone? That seemed like a very strange and even less sanitary way of doing it?
It was very awkward and off-putting, to be honest. I definitely understand why you couldn’t allow a serving spoon to touch someone’s ice cream, but I was left wondering why in the world they would have a self-serve candy station in the first place? Especially given the fact that covid is still spreading? Surely he wasn’t the first person to fumble the sprinkles spoon?
I regret that I didn’t notice the station set-up as I was distracted with the rest of our order and paying. Otherwise I would have definitely stepped in to help before he got started on his own. He was just trying to be self-sufficient and do as instructed. He felt terrible as he was trying so hard to be careful and not spill any candy, and was then loudly accused of contaminating the sprinkles. Perhaps the employee could have shown him a little grace. Knowing the sprinkles were going to have to be replaced, she could have let him finish and then quietly replaced it. I’d be happy to buy you all a new tub of sprinkles to replace the ones he tarnished.
A couple other notes- my son’s waffle cone came with a paper sleeve and my waffle cone did not. Mine quickly fell apart after leaving the shop and left me with more mess than anything. My son ended up giving me his cone sleeve to try to hold my cone together. I had also ordered a cold brew with sweet cream for my husband. The sweet cream was nice but the cold brew itself was very watered-down.
Overall it was a very confusing and disappointing (and for my kiddo, humiliating) experience. We will get our Lopez Island Creamery ice cream elsewhere next time.
