点评:The positives:
+ Lovely horses and ponies which are clearly well cared for and loved, which is always the most important thing, of course
+ First class facilities - they can offer almost anything you can imagine - and good availability
+ The booking process was also quite simple
+ Beautiful location (and very handy for where I live)
Things which make me unlikely to return:
The only piece of advice I was given by the instructor during the assessment period was that I was to give my mount "a big kick on". Nothing else at all. They had my friend walking, trotting and cantering for quite some time. Although they then went on to conclude that both my friend and I would be best on the lead rein or lunge if we ever returned for lessons, we were allowed to walk and trot independently on the hack up and down some of the steep paths around the Hydro, which we both find extremely strange, as you are so safety conscious in other ways. My pony stumbled quite badly on loose stones 5 times during the hack, which was quite alarming (I have never experienced that to that extent at any of the many other places where I have ridden, some of which included even steeper hills). This may be due to the fact that it had been a horribly wet morning and had only just stopped raining before the time slot we had booked for (I had actually thought our hack would probably be cancelled for safety reasons). Bizarrely, it was also presumed that my friend (we barely even know each other, as we only met a couple of months ago) was my partner, which I thought was unprofessional.
I had really wanted to enjoy my time there and so be able to start riding a lot more regularly without having to negotiate public transport. I have been horse daft since I was a child, but was never lucky enough to be able to access regular riding or proper lessons. I am now travelling for over an hour on public transport to attend lessons at another equestrian centre with a much more welcoming atmosphere. Sadly, they are not on Trip Advisor, not being a tourist attraction. Incidentally, what I pay there for a half hour private lesson is barely any more expensive than what I would pay for a half hour group lesson at the Hydro. The other place also encourages and teaches riders to groom, tack up, etc. at no extra cost, whereas the Hydro is sadly too busy a business for all of that.
