Today (Friday 23rd September) at 4.30pm I walked into the costa in greystones to meet a friend from America that I hadn’t seen in awhile. When I joined her and my sister in the que we immediately began talking excitedly and greeting each other.
The woman working behind the counter started to snap the tongs in her hand open and closed repeatedly. She was snapping them and waving them in the air in our direction. She raised her voice at us and told us to be quiet and that there’s other customers here and we had to keep it down. I was so shocked and taken aback as there was a large group of teenagers in the que also who had been talking loudly. In response to her I said “ok that’s fine, you don’t have to be so rude and aggressive to us.” The man working behind the counter with her then started shouting at us “she works so hard! You don’t even know her! Go somewhere else if you don’t like it” the other woman then told us to leave again.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for 7 years in multiple different cafes. I have never had such a shocking and upsetting interaction. With my experience in the industry, I am well aware that this is a completely unacceptable way to treat a customer and I truly hope something is done about it. I felt extremely embarrassed, uncomfortable and upset as did my friend and my sister. We left immediately after this happened without purchasing anything.
