Just beyond lies the restaurant, gently illuminated with perfectly balanced lighting that immediately sets a tranquil, refined tone. We often find ourselves commenting on the overly harsh lighting in many establishments; this, however, was pitch-perfect. The gentle scent of joss sticks wafting through the lounge further enhanced the calm and sophisticated atmosphere.
We began the evening with cocktails in the lounge while awaiting our table. Regrettably, I can’t recall the name of the drink I had, but I do remember it being quite exceptional — complex, well-balanced, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Dinner was an absolute delight. The menu draws clear influence from Japanese cuisine, which we were told reflects the chef’s background. The wine list, too, is refreshingly distinctive — rather than relying on the usual French offerings, Tan Bueno celebrates Spanish and Portuguese vintages with considerable flair. Of particular note was a Spanish-Japanese fusion wine, Akemi, which was so compelling I felt compelled to jot down its name.
For those with a sweet tooth, the yuzu panna cotta was a true indulgence — delicate, silky, and beautifully composed.
Our friends mentioned that Sandwich has seen a number of businesses close in recent years, so it was especially heartening to see such a vibrant, well-executed restaurant not merely survive but thrive. The dining room was fully booked the evening we attended, suggesting word is spreading beyond the local area.
