点评:Playhouse Square deserves and needs a restaurant that reliably delivers a great dining experience before a show. The Friars' Table is, perhaps, the most recent effort, but it falls a bit short of the mark.
The Friar's Table is located in the former Cowell & Hubbard restaurant space on Euclid Avenue at E. 13th. The configuration is more or less recognizable, but the decor and vibe are very different. On the strong positive side, one of the people behind this restaurant is Edwin Chrostowski of Edwin's, with a similar social conscience mission of helping those formerly incarcerated to find gainful employment in the hospitality industry. We fully support that effort and have had a great experience at Edwin's in Shaker Square (which is reported to be moving to the old Nighttown space).
The general theme of the restaurant is, as the name tells you, a Friary. There is lots of wood and stone. The menus are printed on coarse, parchment-like paper. Our table had a fountain nearby. The waiters all have similarly designed clothing with earth tones. Curiously, the music is from around 1980. We did not expect Gregorian chants, but it subtracted from, rather than added to, the vibe.
On an absolute scale, we had a good experience, but it was an odd experience nonetheless. First, the service was a mixed bag, which we expected. Still, it was obvious who had an affinity for customer service and those who did not. We don't care about your past -- just appear welcoming and happy to entertain guests. Our primary server had that mindset; others did not. The food was actually very good and generally well presented.
Second, the timing was not what one might ordinarily expect. We arrived before 6;00 on a Saturday night to see a show, but they were already out of what they described as their signature dish. What?! We ordered an alternative, but the entrees arrived about 5 minutes after we placed them, and before our appetizers. What? Our sense was that the menu contemplated food cooked in advance that could be served on short notice, but it was odd to get our entrees so fast, followed just a few minutes by the appetizer. What? And why so fast?
Similarly, the wine menu was about as basic as you can get, with roughly four choices of house wine and little detail other than the varietal (e.g., "chardonnay") and no label or vintage. We had a half-carafe of Chardonnay that, despite the above, suited the meal. We appreciate the choice in selection, but it was not clear why they could not have told us so. We don't mind if it changes -- that can be very good.
We enjoyed our time here, but the experience needs a little work. We are frequent theater-goers, but w'll continue to look for a regular for dinner before a show.
