点评：While it does not have a name associated with any of the tv characters and is off main street The Derby Restaurant captures the essence and spirit of the real Mayberry and gives you a taste of the South's culinary past. The Derby will give you the best bang for your buck of any Mount Airy Eatery and considering the sidewalks in downtown "Mayberry" roll up at 5 o'clock it is your only defense against a growing sprawl of chain restaurants. We went first for lunch and got a hot meat and 3 sides for $7.79 !!! I had a surpising high quality and Delicious Beef Stew over rice accompanied by Southern Style Sweet Yams and a huge portion of Home made Mac and Cheese worthy of Aunt Bea's table. My wife had the Lexington BBQ which was shredded BBQ meats in sauce. She took the house salad as a side which included their own recipe salad dressing, while also indulging in the delicious Mac & Cheese. I was disappointed that they were out of Cobbler and so decided to pass up my hotel's complementry corn flakes and skim milk and return the next day for breakfast where I got 2 eggs, link sauceage and hash browns for $5.69. All was very good and I got my cobbler which was blackberry and not quite as excellent as the Peach Cobbler I had here 10 years ago. You wouldn't expect vegitarian offerings here but a platter of their home cooked favorites is available.
A word of warning: If you are looking for Bistro Atmosphere you won't find it here. The building is a 1937 gas station with add on and has the look of an industrial building. They are still using the original gas station restrooms. This is culinary history from the booths to the lunch counter. They also do sidewalk service. I'm not sure if this is a tradition or a Covid Thing. They are presently suffering from the labor shortage and there a two senior waitresses working their butt off waitng and bussing tables as well as running takeouts to the curside service so don't be shocked if you see an unbussed table. I found the staff friendly& service was prompt.
Since its here since '37 I'm sure Andy must've eaten here and if you like great food and great prices without bells and whistles you need to vist.
