点评：Hiking Lookout Mountain Trail in Montreat
It has been several years since I hiked to the top of Lookout Mountain in Montreat, North Carolina that is at an elevation of 3,800 feet. With my grandson, Louis, and his Dad, Matt, on a beautiful Saturday morning we hike Lookout Mountain. The Lookout Mountain Trail is 1.4 miles roundtrip with 623 feet elevation change. The trail is basically a continual slow uphill climb as it winds to the top. The trail starts with a long stair step type trail. I’m 5’2” and these are tall steps for my legs. Winding up the mountain the trails passes through tunnels of mountain laurel and rhododendron. In some locations, there are switchbacks and actually wooden steps built where washouts have occurred. On a Saturday morning there are a lot of hikers of all ages so it is busy but not crowded. At the top are rocking outcroppings to scramble over that provide spectacular views. It is hot at the top. As a 75 year old from Florida (sea level), I definitely took my time climbing to the top with numerous stops along the way. It took me about 50 minutes to climb to the outcroppings. The top provides spectacular views of Montreat and the Sevens Sisters of the Black Mountains. Take Overlook Road in Montreat past stop sign, maintenance shed. There are two parking lots on right of the road for Lookout Trail near top of the road. A big rock says Lookout Trace - at the Parking lot where the trail starts. An additional parking lot is available further up the road.
