点评:First off, the house is very interesting because the Young family who owned it after Morse kept all of their furnishings and art collection intact and the daughter, Annette catalogued everything. What a boon for the historic preservationists!
The grounds are gorgeous, we were lucky to be there in the fall when the leaves were turning and enjoyed walking around the trails on the property.
Unfortunately, the guide spoiled the experience of the house tour. We go on a LOT of historic property tours. I myself am a guide at two historic properties, so I get the challenges of managing a tour group. But this was a group of four. Typically, your tour can be a bit more flexible and adapt to the interests of the group when it's such a small group.
When giving the rules prior to entering the house museum, Judy delivered them in such a scolding manner as if we were already in trouble. Every house museum has rules which amount to "don't touch anything not even the walls," but you needn't deliver them as a strict school marm. From the very beginning she made it clear that questions were not welcome. Every question was met with a retort along the lines of "I will address that later." It seemed as though her tour was highly regimented and any deviation from the script was not welcome.
When she misspoke in a confusing manner and I asked a question to clarify, she got extremely huffy and defensive. I truly was just confused as she was contradicting something she said earlier. But it seemed as though she had little time for our questions and interests.
Giving her the benefit of the doubt, she did say it was her third tour of the day and perhaps they normally have volunteers who give tours and one called off, so she was forced to cover them as a staff member? I'm not sure. But her unwelcoming demeanor and lack of warmth would certainly not encourage repeat visitors.
