点评:This was our first time in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Mata Mata was our first (and on reflection, our favourite) rest camp. We stayed in a riverside chalet (no. 9) and the view over the waterhole was just incredible. On our first night, we watched a giraffe and cheetah come down to drink whilst we had dinner and were entertained by the cheeky jackals staring hopefully at all of the braai's. We skipped the afternoon drive on our second day thinking we would see even more exciting sightings from the comfort of our chalet, but all we saw was a small herd of Hartebeest and a couple of Wilderbeest. As we came to realise over our 2 week stay in the park, that's the KTC for you!
Our check in experience was good - the receptionist was worried about us and tried calling (we had no signal) as she knew we were coming from Windhoek and hadn't crossed the border into the park yet (border closes at 4.30). We made the border crossing with minutes to spare after a hectic drive and a kind reception was very much appreciated! Our chalet was clean and comfortable, and the aircon worked well until power out in the park from 10pm-5am. It was 40 degrees when we stayed and we did struggle with the air con switching off at night. Mostly because there were a lot of mosquitoes at Mata Mata and the repellents weren't 100% effective so we slept in long sleeve shirts and didn't want to sleep outside the sheet. I would highly recommend bringing your own personal mosquito net if you're staying here in the summer and a battery-powered fan.
The jackal, yellow mongoose, ground squirrels and meerkats you can watch around camp made this rest camp really special. I'd never seen meerkats in the wild before and watching a big group of them dig and play around our chalet was something I'll never forget. The pool was also my favourite of all the rest camps as it attracted a lot of butterflies and dragonflies, and it was pretty magical watching them flutter around you as you relaxed in the pool.
The shop was well stocked when we were there (hardly any fresh food, but that's pretty standard for the camp shops) and fuel was in good supply - no issues with card machines not working. WiFi was patchy and cut in and out, but we only needed it to let family know we'd arrived and it was absolutely fine for that.
