Negri-Napote Native Grassland Preserve的点评
点评：As a bird photographer, I visited Negri-Nepote twice within a week—early mornings, fully prepared, with high hopes of seeing grassland specialists like Bobolinks, Indigo Buntings, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Savannah Sparrows. These are species regularly reported in eBird, and this preserve is often described as a prime habitat. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of those expectations.
The “grassland” is more accurately a patchy, low meadow with scattered woody growth and hard-packed dirt trails—not the tall, concealing grass or active birdscape one might expect. Despite optimal weather, peak morning hours (6:20–7:45 AM), and a meticulous camera setup, the preserve was oddly quiet. Over two visits, I saw none of the target species. The most notable encounters were a Great Blue Heron, a Green Heron, and a few common birds I could’ve photographed from my backyard.
Ticks were an issue, even with treated clothing. Lighting was often challenging due to trail orientation, and bird activity was disappointingly sparse. It’s hard to say whether this is due to habitat degradation or seasonal shifts, but it was a letdown given the preserve’s reputation.
The trails are well-maintained and easy to walk, and the surrounding area is peaceful. But if you’re hoping for the kind of biodiversity often described online, be prepared to leave disappointed. This is a spot with potential—but right now, it’s not delivering.
Would I return? Maybe, but with different expectations. Bring bug spray, manage your hopes, and check eBird closely before making the trip.
