点评:This was our 8th night on the road of a 21-day road expedition across the Dakotas to Montana and back. We got to Malta after birding parts of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge and the Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge. We'd hoped to also visit the Fort Peck Interpretive Center, but it was closed the day we were there. In Malta we checked out the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum and Field Station which was interesting, and the Phillips County Museum which was a bit sad.
We'd had a great experience at the Albertson's store in Williston, SD, and knowing we had to find something for dinner, we headed over to the Albertson's in Malta before driving out to the Country Inn. But the Walking Dead-like scene we found there should have given us some warning what we'd stumbled into in this small town.
When we arrived at the Country Inn, we walked into a "lobby" that felt more like a large living room that hadn't been tidied up for a very, very long time. The room just had a grungy feel overall that made you not want to touch anything, much less eat breakfast there.
There was no secure room door lock - it felt more like you were staying in a bedroom in someone's house. The un-closeable A/C vent in the bathroom left it freezing cold, and the tiny shower had an ill-fitting curtain that kept sticking to you when you backed into it. The tiny room was crammed with Goodwill-quality furniture. You have to park in a weedy dirt lot. The outside walls of the building are covered in mildew of some kind. There were only a couple of implements in the "kitchenette." The coffee in the breakfast room was weak and in short supply. Oh, and the room's tap water stunk of rotten eggs which left you not very refreshed after showering.
Overall, this was like staying with family . . . that had rather you hadn't showed up. Sure, we've paid more for lesser accommodations, but that was for 'tent cabin' in Yosemite National Park, and we awoke to a view of Half Dome, not to a pair of ripped jorts (jean shorts) hanging in a tree outside our window. The "hotel for sale" sign out front seems to say it all: these people have given up (if they ever cared).
On the upside, it "only" cost us $82 to find out how bad this place is, so it could have been much worse. Plus we didn't get robbed or catch any diseases. Yay! But what I want to know, what drug were all these people on who rated this place "charming" and "clean"? I want me some that stuff!
