点评:I have driven past these very impressive cemetery gates for many years and recall them from my childhood. I have never stopped at the cemetery, but as I had been at a party in nearby Eltham North ... there was still a bit of light ... and it was Sunday so the intersection they sit on was not as busy...it appeared everything was lined up for me to visit.
I am not sure how you would access them more easily, perhaps there is a back entrance to this cemetery.... However, I parked in front of the gates. The words on the gates, "Janva Vitae" means "Gate of Life" .
In 1867 two acres of land was set aside and trustees from 6 denominations appointed to oversee establishment of the cemetery at Diamond Creek. It stands as a record of the pioneering families of the district. The ornamental gateway was erected after the death of pioneer William Ellis in 1896 in accordance with his will.
Alan Marshall- Australian writer, story teller, humanist and social documenter is also buried here. Alan Marshall’s gravestone is a simple rock with the inscription ‘Gurrawilla’ which translates as ‘storyteller’, a name Aborigines in Arnhem Land gave him when he lived there for 8 months.
The cemetery is exceptionally well kept and quite lovely to walk through.
