点评:While enjoying an overnight visit to Manistee, we drove over to Kaleva, a small town about 30 minutes away. Settled by Finnish immigrants around 1900, the town remains fully influenced by its Finnish roots. One of its main attractions is the Bottle House, built in the early 1940s by John Makinen, owner of a beverage bottling plant. He used some 60,000 bottles, most from his own business, to insulate his new home while creating something unique. The bottles were laid on their side with the bottom facing out and cemented layer by layer. Makinen died before his family moved into the house, but they lived there for several decades. In 1980 the house was purchase the local historical society and now serves as the town's historical museum. Just about every room in the house, basement to the second floor, is filled with local history celebrating the Finnish immigrants, the town's notable residents, and their heritage. Don't miss the WPA murals by Harry Armstrong depicting the epic poem, The Kalevela, which tells the Finnish creation story. Behind the house is a recenttly built Finnish sauna. And in the yard, a totem pole depicting figures of The Kalevela.
