Cliff House Maine: Views Worthy of a Netflix Drama, Service That Misses the Mark

点评：There’s no denying it—Cliff House is breathtaking. You are quite literally perched on a cliff, with jaw-dropping views of the ocean from nearly every angle. The lobby alone feels like the set of the latest Netflix series about wealthy New Englanders—elevated, elegant, and wildly photogenic.
We stayed in a gorgeous room with three bathrooms (yes, three!) and couldn’t get enough of the cozy plaid robes—so much so that we almost bought them for $165 each. The gym is fantastic, with a wide variety of equipment and ocean views, plus group classes. The kiddie pool with its infinity edge is stunning, and the hot tub is enormous. The adult pool (13+) felt a bit stuffy, and it was tough to snag chairs together, which was frustrating.
Food-wise, Nubb’s lobster roll was one of the best we had in Maine—and major points for offering a gluten-free bun. A trolley runs into town a few times a day, and there are activities for kids on-site.
Now, for the not-so-great: The service left a lot to be desired. We arrived at 1:30 p.m. hoping for early check-in (standard check-in is 4 p.m.) and were met with scoffs from the front desk staff. No warmth, no effort, no accommodations—not even help with bags or suggestions for what to do while we waited. On checkout day, housekeeping knocked at 9 a.m. and we had to ask to extend to 11 a.m.—again, met with resistance.
Dining reservations are nearly impossible to get, even for breakfast. When we asked to be seated at 10 a.m. as a party of five, the staff acted like we’d asked to charter a yacht.
Bottom line: The scenery is undeniably stunning, but the hospitality doesn’t match the price point. At nearly $2,500 per night, I could think of a dozen other places I’d rather stay—especially with kids in tow.
