Established in the late 19th century by newly arrived Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe and officially recognized by the City of Chicago in 1912, the oldest open-air market in the country was moved from its original site on Maxwell Street to Canal Street and then to Des Plaines Street to make room for expansion of the University of Illinois-Chicago campus. This year, it has returned to its roots on Maxwell Street between South Halsted and South Union and on Union between West Rochford and West Liberty, east of Curtis Granderson Field on the UIC campus and west of the Dan Ryan Expressway. It was open on May 26, June 30 and July 28 and will be open from 9 to 2 on September 1 and 29 and October 27. Admission is free. It features small businesses, farmers, floral shops, artists, makers and re-sellers selling food and merchandise vendors selling hand-made crafts, resale hardwares and clothing. If you can't find it here, it probably hasn't been invented yet. In addition, the market has incorporated with nearby businesses and restaurants, including Express Grill, Hashbrowns, Jim's Original Hot Dog, Bar Louie and Lalo's Mexican Restaurant.
