点评:I had never been to Valois’ in Chicago and had been wanting to go for years.
It clearly stated before ordering on a handwritten note, “Cash Only” and I did notice a nonbank branded ATM.
I asked a counter person before ordering I don’t have cash could you take a card?
This person told me “the lady over there has a machine”.
I misinterpreted her statement to mean they could swipe my card, and my big brother and I went ahead to order our breakfast.
The cooks prepared and put the food on our trays and I then slid them to the cashier.
She said it was $28 dollars and change and I handed her my card and was told cash only!
I replied that I did not have cash and was told “they had a machine and would not have ordered cooked food before ordering but was told, “they had a machine”.
She directed me to go around the corner.
And now the story gets worse, I went around the corner to another person who I thought was the person with the machine and once again presented my card.
This second lady pointed to an ATM machine which I had noticed earlier and now I understood!
Voila the ATM which was now going to help me whilst my food was getting cold!
I inserted my card and it dispensed the requested notes to me.
I looked at my bank statement today and there were (3) separate $3 dollar fees so my $80 dollars cash cost me $89 dollars total.
The 9% “Inconvenient fees charged by the ATM I thought was exorbitant!
Their food was nothing exceptional but it was hot.
The personal lesson was to take cash!,
I left an adequate tip for the bus person cleaning tables because the whole bad situation of miscommunication was not their fault.
The parking had already cost me $5 so everything added a very bad taste in my brain.
IF I ever go back cash is king so be advised that the merchant has a friend that has unsatisfactory fees!
But, I probably will choose to go to another restaurant that has less “friction”.
As a World traveler especially after Covid, I assumed that they would take plastic especially after being told “they have a machine” by 2 people. CASH ONLY no matter what 2 employees tell you!
